How to Write an Obituary (Death Notice)

An obituary or death notice will be posted in the Obituary section of our website. You may also choose to have the obituary printed in the newspaper(s), which will also be posted online.

The following information is usually included:

  • Full name of the deceased (nickname could be included)
  • City or town of residence
  • Some indication of the nature of the death such as “suddenly” or “after a long illness”
  • List of immediate family members of the deceased, specifying if they are alive or dead by using phrases such as “John is pre-deceased by his sister” or “John is survived by his wife”
  • Location and time for the funeral, memorial or celebration of life service
  • Memorable ways of honouring the deceased through mention of personal achievements, hobbies, interests, military service, etc.
